Jan 13 Community Make a Blanket Day to benefit Project Linus at Jones Sewing Machine Co., 3410 N. Prospect Rd. Jan 13 – The Peoria City/County Health Department (PCCHD) is sponsoring a FREE Osteoporosis Heel Screening event on from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Health Department, 2116 North Sheridan Road, Peoria. This free screening is important for all women over the age of 65 or any woman younger than 65 with risk factors such as having a family history of osteoporosis, weighing under 130 pounds, having a low calcium intake or an inactive lifestyle, consuming tobacco or alcohol, or taking medications such as steroids for long periods of time. For this 15 minute screening, women will have to take off one sock and shoe for the test. Pantyhose are not advised. Space is limited for this event & registration required. Jan 13 – Anger Management Group of Adults @ Proctor Hospital. This is an 8-week course on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Counseling Center on Proctor campus. Cost is $250 per person if paid in advance or $35 per session. Call 689-6008 for more info.

Jan 14 – Peoria County Genealogy Society will present guest speaker at Lakeview Library at 7:00 p.m. That guest speaker will be local historian and noted author, Norman V Kelly. A Peoria native, much of Norm’s writing is derived from his real life experiences as a private detective. Norm will present details and facts on major events in the incredible history of Peoria from 1845-1950.

Jan 14 – Cancer Basics 101: Everything You Need to Know About Cancer at the Illinois CancerCare Classroom (on Route 91) from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Call Ashlyn Smith @ 693-8139. Admission: FREE. This is a social workshop available for those newly diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers. Each patient in attendance will receive a complementary canvas bag of “goodies.” Call 693-8139 to reserve your spot.

Jan. 17 – The Central Illinois Jazz Society presents Illinois Central Jazz Train at 6:00 and 8:30 p.m. and John Miller and the Romaniacs at 7:15 p.m. NEW LOCATION!! The Finish Line Banquet Room, Located in Landmark Recreation Center, 3225 N. Dries Lane.

Jan 18 — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Luncheon @ 11:00 a.m. at the Peoria Civic Center Exhibit Hall. Contact: Alma Brown @ (309) 494-8554. Admission: $40.00 each or $400 for a table of ten. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Luncheon will be held in the Exhibit Hall on January 18, 2010. Doors will open at 11:00 a.m., and the luncheon will begin at 12:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 per person and $400 for a table of 10. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased by calling Alma Brown at 309-494-8554. Tickets can be picked up at City Hall, 419 Fulton St., Ste. 207. The guest speaker is Dr. Benjamin Carson.

Jan 23 – Peoria Area SeniorNet, the local chapter of a national organization that promotes computer literacy among seniors, is sponsoring a free seminar on Electronic Tax Preparation from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The workshop will be held in classrooms 3 & 4 on the lower level of the Proctor Professional Building at 5401 North Knoxville Ave. Advance registration is not necessary and the workshop is open to all ages.  Bob Picton, an AARP tax aide, will demonstrate many of the common features and functions of the PC version of TurboTax.  The knowledge gained can also be applied to using other software products that are available for tax preparation. Jan 27 – Counseling Center @ Proctor Hospital will present “The Power of a Positive Attitude.” This free program will be held from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in Classroom III of the Proctor Professional Building. Call 689-6008 to register.

Jan 27 – Sign up for Red Cross’ ‘CPR Made Simple’ class. In just one hour you can learn basic life-saving techniques. No certification. Cost is $20. Call 309-677-7272.
